[TRAININGS] New trainings available for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

👉 At ABC we have developed with our partners Nepsen and the IFC, a training course on the CBAM European regulation ! It includes a training on the basics of CBAM, as well as a sector-specific training for the steel industry.

What is CBAM ?  What it the objective of the regulation ?

🇪🇺 The CBAM, which came into force at the end of 2023, will gradually replace the free auctions of the European ETS carbon market.  It is part of the Fit for 55 legislative package aimed at reducing GHG emissions by 55% by 2030 compared with 1990 GHG levels. This European regulation on imported products circulating freely in Europe, effective from the end of 2023, aims to reduce carbon leakage. Importers will have to purchase certificates corresponding to the emissions of their products and declare the emissions of imported products via a CBAM register. These certificates will be introduced gradually, while free auctions on the global carbon market will be phased out until 2034. The price of the certificates will be based on the average weekly auction price of the Emissions Trading Scheme.

🏭 6 sectors are covered by the CBAM: cement, iron and steel, aluminium, hydrogen, electricity and fertilisers.

🗓️ The transitional period of the CBAM until the end of 2025 is intended to allow importers to understand the ins and outs of the regulation. From 2026, the definitive CBAM period will begin, involving certain mandatory conditions for importing into Europe. The status of ‘CBAM authorised declarant’ and the possession of certificates for importers will be required in order to be able to import. No imports will be authorised from 2026 for the effective phase, unless importers have the required status and certificates.
